Putting Skills ... The CraftSmith Total Integration Putting System

Putting skill begins with the absolute confidence you have the ability to roll a straight 10' putt.  This is accomplished by doing the same thing the same way every time.  Your tools to develop this skill are the pre-putt fundamentals of posture over the ball, alignment of the body and clubface to the intended path.  Note the use of the word path and not line!  This is critical putting psychology for confidence.  Left to right ball position is a fine tuning mechanism for zeroing in on your target (the hole, a part of the hole or an intermediate aiming target).

This program teaches a straight back, straight into the back of the ball club movement.  The purpose of this is to keep the face aimed at the target at all times (except on long backstrokes required for lag putts).  If you are an arc putter, we strongly suggest you consider a change.  Our logic is very simple, in arc putting there is only one place where the putter face is square to the target.

On a day to day basis, this point varies.  Squaring the putter face and speed control are THE two controlling factors in successful putting.  Having a perfect stroke path simply isn't all that important.  Learning to strike the back of the ball with an accelerating putter is the key to "magically" controlling both face direction and speed.  When the smoke clears, your task is to always focus on speed.  Said differently ... what was the last thing that passed through the bug's min when it hit the windshield?  Same goes for putting.  All putts are ultimately speed putts.

That's two good reasons to focus on speed and not stroke.  None the less, knowing you have the mechanical skill to mindlessly make a straight, uphill, 10' putt, is the starting point.  To that end we have developed putting aids to help with hat can be a very short and satisfying process!

To accomplish our square to square method, we advocate a right handed stroke with a weak top hand grip.

BangerBalls w/ TruRoll Carpet

We define a short putt as any putt you expect to make 90% of the time ... based on proven skill/performance.  There is one strategy for short putting ... bang the ball into the back of the hole (ball has the speed to touch the bottom, back of the cup).  There are three kinds of short putts ... straight, might break and will break less than 1.68" (the width of one ball).  Where you aim the face of the putter is the critical, controlling variable in short putting!

I-M CZone

When a putt is outside of your 90% confidence range, yet still within a makeable distance, we have two training aids for putts in the 6-15' range and the 15'+ range.  These two ranges represent two situations.  The closer range is defined as that distance where you sense a good opportunity to make a putt and there is no real fear of making a mistake.  This closer range begs for a more aggressive, maximum effort (within our system's rules) to try to make the putt.  Everyone has heard the expression ... play it X balls outside the hole.  Our BreakingBalls aid gives you a visual reference for what X number of ball actually look like as well as visual tools to get the ball started at your "high side" target.

When a putt falls into the psychological distance of still being able to make a few, but the first twinges of three putting appear, we offer another I/M aid.  Our CZone aid reinforces our rule system ... get it to the hole, keep it on the pro side and leave it where you know you will make the next putt.  This may sound like a negative strategy, but it is absolutely positive!

Living in Fear of Three Putting?

Want Some Control and Wishing for Some Lower Scores?  Simple, but Amazingly Effective!

90% Confidence Circle

Our ConfidenceCircle is a completely simple device.  It CAUSES you to be a very good lag putter.  It's all about relaxation ... mind and body!  The simple idea is to putt at a big, yellow blanket.  Forget trying to make the putt.  Just roll your ball anywhere on the blanket,  Anywhere on the blanket is OK.  The idea is to be nice to yourself.  Your blanket is as large as your 90% confidence area.  Of course that area is not a perfect circle.

The LagLadder teaches you distance control.

This is al about allowing your sub-conscious to do the work.  It is a pleasant exercise in being "deliberately stupid".  It's time to be nice to yourself.  When you can do this, your mind is relaxed and it transfers to you arms and hands which in turn soften to the task of getting the ball close.

Is this negative? No way!  It seems relaxed muscles work more efficiently than stiff muscles.  You will make more putts trying to miss in the right place than you will ever make deliberately putting at the hole.

Chip Basket/CarryNet          TrajNet

Controlling the trajectory and subsequent roll of chip shots is the primary skill development task.  Trajectory is controlled by club selection and face squareness.  These aids are primarily used for off course practice

Controlling the trajectory and carry of pitch shots is the primary task.  This skill is as much mental visualization as physical skill.  Kinda like the gimmicky challenges on BigBreak, these aids provide a visual "obstacle" to aid the learning of trajectory and carry control.

The key to controlling the length of a less than full swing pitch shot is to minimize the use of your hands and to control the length of backswing and then to accelerate through to a longer than backswing finish (proof you rotated your chest to the ball and on thru to the target).  Our SwingCatcher allows you to feel these positions.

The model of performance for this teaching is Steve Stricker.
